There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.” - Henry James.  Afternoon tea, one of the most quintessential of English customs was introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the year 1840.The Duchess would asked that a tray of tea, bread and butter and cake be brought to her room during the afternoon. She began inviting friends to join her for tea and and enjoyable walk through the gardens.This pause for tea became a fashionable social event. It was made in England by Enoch Wedgwood (Tunstall) Ltd. in the early 1960sEach piece is marked "Gold Medallion, Enoch Wedgwood (Tunstall) Ltd, England, Trademark founded in 1835" with the distinctive unicorn trademark of Enoch Wedgwood.Enoch Wedgwood (1813-1879) was an English potter, founder in 1860 of the pottery firm Wedgwood & Co of Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent. He was a distant cousin of the famous potter Josiah Wedgwood, of Josiah Wedgwood & Sons but their two businesses were separate concerns.Wedgwood married Jane Mattinson (1814-1880) in 1837.
